David Millar, top professional Scottish cyclist "The Costa Brava had our name written all over it".
There’s far more to Llafranc and the surrounding area than simply lying on the beach (although that’s ok too). In fact, over the years, the area has become increasingly popular for its ability to pack in a wide variety of land, sea and air activities into a relatively small area. It’s also world famous for road cycling, with around 100 professionals living in the Girona area and triathletes preparing for the coming season.
Llafranc in Summer: Land, Sea, and Air Adventures
Land Activities:
Hikers are drawn to the Cami de Ronda, a coastal path offering breathtaking views of cliffs and coves as it winds south towards Calella de Palafrugell and north to Tamariu. Inland, the Gavarres hills offer mountain biking and nature trails shaded by Mediterranean pines. For culture lovers, Llafranc and nearby towns hosts festivals, open-air concerts (e.g Cap Roig Festival), and markets. Foodies can explore Catalan cuisine at local restaurants or take part in seasonal cooking classes using fresh seafood and regional produce.

Sea Activities:
During summer, the Llafranc bay is a swimming and water sports paradise. The beach is very safe and perfect for young kids as there are no tidal currents to worry about (although be careful of the Tramontana wind from the north as it can blow an inflatable ball or boat out to sea very quickly). Early in the morning, the crystal-clear water is ideal for snorkelling around the rocky coves and there are protected swimming areas or “aquatic lanes” for experienced open water swimmers. You can also hire a giant inflatable slide for the whole family to play in in the middle of the bay. Local diving centres offer excursions to rich marine habitats such as the Formigues Islands and els Ullastres as well as local ship-wrecks. Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding are popular, especially at sunrise or sunset. Sailing charters and motorboat rentals allow visitors to explore the Costa Brava coastline or anchor in hidden coves for a swim. Fishing trips and jet-skiing also draw adventure seekers.

Air Activities:
For a bird’s-eye view of the coastline, paragliding and ultralight flights are available in nearby areas like Empuriabrava. These thrilling experiences offer panoramic views of the Mediterranean, perfect for adrenaline lovers and photographers alike. In summer, hot air ballooning over the Empordà plain offers stunning views of both the mountains and the sea during early morning flights.
